The Amana Heritage Society will host our annual meeting on Thursday, October 19 at 7 P.M. in the Amana Heritage Museum auditorium, 705 44th Ave, Amana.
University of Iowa professor Dr. Glenn Ehrstine will give a program, "German Iowans and the Politics of Brewing." The German immigrants who made Iowa their home in the 1800s found fertile fields perfectly suited for growing hops and barley. Brewing was easier said than done, however. Of all the Midwestern states where Germans settled, only Iowa was dominated by temperance advocates, who pursued prohibition measures with Republican support from 1856 onwards. Professor Ehrstine's talk will explore the state's contested brewing culture and the corresponding political choices faced by German Iowans from the Civil War through World War I.
Heritage Society board and staff will report on the past year's activities and preview plans for the coming year. Members present will elect three people to serve on the Amana Heritage Society Board of Directors.
Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
