Mystery Photo 2 Mystery Photo [76.61, Mill Race]

What is the man on the right standing on?
When Photos are added or donated to our collection we try to find out as much as we can about the image. We try to answer the basic questions of who, what, where, when and in some cases why. When a photo is donated by an individual these things are usually much easier to determine. However, in the case of our current mystery photo, it was not donated by an individual with actual knowledge about the photograph. Rather, the image is taken from a slightly damaged postcard that was never mailed. The photographer is unknown as are the people featured in the photo. Despite this, we do know quite a lot about the image. It was taken circa 1900 in the village of Amana. The bridge on the left is part of what is today 47th Avenue. In the background we can see the Woolen Mill and the building in the center of the image is the Amana Hotel. And of course the water way is the smaller portion of the mill race, which powered the Calico Factory. So you might ask, why is this a mystery photo? Well we'd like to know what the man on the right is standing on. If you think you know, please contact our office at 319-622-3567 or e-mail us at amherit@juno.com
