Membership Supports Heritage Society
So far in 2006 over 30 individuals have donated literally hundreds of artifacts, documents and photographs to our museum. Our collections make the museum a valuable resource for the community, as well as tourist visitors and scholars. And with the help of our members, the collections continue to grow! We take this opportunity to thank those donors.
We also thank all of our members who have already renewed your membership for the coming year. Your membership allows the Amana Heritage Society to preserve our community’s past and to offer a quality experience to our visitors. As we plan for the future, your membership and support continues to be the foundation on which we build. If you haven’t yet renewed, please do so.
Membership levels are: $15 Individual; $20 Family; $35 Contributing; $100 Patron.
You can mail your check to:
PO Box 81, Amana, IA 52203.
You might also consider giving a gift membership to a relative or friend. It would make a great Christmas gift. Just contact the museum office to make it happen.
Leave a Legacy. Please help us advance our work in the future by remembering the Amana Heritage Society in your will and estate planning. Several of our board, staff and members have provided for the Amana Heritage Society in their wills and estate planning. By supporting the Amana Heritage Society you too can leave a legacy far into the future.
NOTES
CEP Grant. Our programs and operations this year are supported in part by a Cultural Enrichment Partnership Grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
HRDP Grants. Three grants from the State Historical Society’s Historical Resource Development Program (a part of the REAP program) helped us preserve a variety of cultural resources this year. One grant helped us repair the roof of the Cooper Shop building in Middle Amana. Another provided funds to organize, store and catalogue our growing photograph collection. And the third provided for shelving, boxes and labor to store our textile collection.
Office Space for Rent. The Amana Heritage Society has a very nice one or two room office for rent at our Homestead church site. It includes a desk, computer station and conference table. Rent is negotiable based on usage. Contact Lanny at the museum.
CCA Yearbooks. We need the CCA yearbooks for 2000 through 2006 to get our collection up to date. Please contact the museum if you have one to donate.
Annual Meeting Report
The annual meeting of the Amana Heritage Society was held Thursday October 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Amana Heritage Museum. Officers and staff of the Heritage Society reported on the past year’s projects and operations, and previewed up-coming activities and programs. Members present elected Allyn Neubauer, Bonnie Hertel and Amy Jacobson to serve 3-year terms on the Amana Heritage Society Board of Directors. President Allyn Neubauer reported that Wendy Sandersfeld was appointed last November to fill a board vacancy.
After the business meeting Lanny Haldy presented an illustrated program on the history of the Amana Millrace and Lily Lake. Laura Hoover then outlined the Amana
Colonies Historical Sites Foundation’s Millrace Rehabilitation Project that will start in November. Refreshments were served after the program

Homestead Blacksmith Shop Has Busy Summer
The sounds of early 20th century technology filled the Homestead Blacksmith shop this season with active demonstrations of blacksmithing and historic printing techniques taking place every Saturday. Area blacksmiths Gerald Reiskamp and Katie DeMuth fired up the forge to demonstrate the craft to visitors. In addition, instructors and students from the University of Iowa Center for the Book operated a Linotype machine and hand set printing press, and demonstrated book-binding techniques.
An Iowa Community Cultural Grant and a grant from Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area helped us get these work shops up and running and the programs started this summer. Visitor response was very good and we plan to expand the demonstration activities in 2007.
Museum Participates in Iowa Heritage Digital Collection Project
The Amana Heritage Society is one of several Iowa historical organizations participating in the Iowa Heritage Digital Collection Project. Supported by the three state University libraries as well as the State Library of Iowa and the State Historical Society, the project’s vision is to create an on-line collection of Iowa history and culture, bringing together unique collections of documents, photographs and diverse media throughout Iowa.
We have been one of the pilot organizations; our experience and feedback is being used to adjust the project to allow more organizations to participate. Executive Director Lanny Haldy is on the project advisory committee.
To date, almost 300 images from our photograph collection have been scanned and added to the project database. These, along with thousands of other images from various Iowa collections are available to users anywhere in the world on the internet. You can check out the collection by going to the LINKS section on our website.
